abstract

the aim of this research is to simulate oil spill behavior in the persian gulf due to the wind andtidal currents. this is achieved by coding an oil spill mathematical model consisting of several major submodels including hydrodynamic model, oil slick dynamic model and oil weathering model. the base of all of them is eulerian approach and they are coupled together to simulate spill incident in the persian gulf. thehydrodynamic model provided to simulate the tidal current is based on two dimensional depth averagedequations of shallow water discretized by finite volume method that is applied on rectangular structured mesh. the tidal current in the gulf is made by imposing tidal fluctuation to the main open boundary at the hormuz strait. this model verification is carried out by comparison the resultant predictions of model with the available measured data and it shows a good agreement. oil slick transport on the sea surface is simulated by an advection-diffusion model. also, the most effective natural processes on oil fate and their effect on oil properties are estimated by an oil weathering model. then, a test case including analytical solution is chosen to ensure the model capability on oil spill simulation. finally, the model is implemented for a spillage event in the persian gulf. by explanation of the presented results, oil fate, the slick transport and other predicted data are demonstrated. the results show the model capability on modelling of an oil spill incident in marine environment.

Numerical Simulation of Oil Spill in Ocean

The spreading of oil in an open ocean may cause serious damage to a marine environmental system. Thus, an accurate prediction of oil spill is very important to minimize coastal damage due to unexpected oil spill accident. The movement of oil may be represented with a numerical model that solves an advection-diffusion-reaction equation with a proper numerical scheme. In this study, the spilled o...

Numerical Modeling of Oil Slick Spread in the Persian Gulf

An oil spill model coupled with a hydrodynamic model was developed to simulate the spread of oil slick in real marine conditions considering the effects of tidal currents, wind and wave. The hydrodynamic model is verified using the measurements of tidal elevations and current speeds at the Persian Gulf. Effect of various governing factors on oil slick movement, tidal currents, wind and wave, ar...

Numerical simulation of the annual circulation of water flow in the Persian Gulf

The Persian Gulf is an important region in the world regarding energy supply, transportation, shipping, and military missions. Therefore, studying the annual circulation of water current in the Persian Gulf is very important for marine experts. In the present study, the simulation of current circulation in the Persian Gulf has been studied using ROMS numerical model and field observations. The ...

Numerical Simulation of Hydraulic Frac-turing Process for an Iranian Gas Field in the Persian Gulf

Most of the Iranian oil and gas wells in the Persian Gulf region are producing through their natural productivity and, in the near future, the use of stimulation methods will be undoubtedly necessary. Hydraulic fracturing as a popular technique can be a stimulation candidate. Due to the absence of adequate research in this field, numerical simulation can be an appropriate method to investigate ...
